What is alkaline water? Sometimes referred to as ionized water, alkaline water is well-structured antioxidant water imbued with many special properties. What are the Properties of Alkaline Water?
Alkaline water has several specific properties that give it health benefits.
Firstly, it has a pH of at least 8 and typically in the order of 9.5. This increased pH helps the body to neutralise acidic wastes and flush them out of your system. Increased acidity in the blood and tissues is regarded by many experts to be the root cause of most degenerative disease. Keeping your blood pH at precisely the ideal value will result in better oxygen transfer through the body, which is vital for life and optimum health.
Secondly, alkaline water has antioxidant properties. This can be measured by checking the ORP (oxidation reduction potential) of water. Alkaline water has a negative ORP measured in mV, typically ranging from -50 to -300mV. This antioxidant property helps to neutralise harmful free radicals which are involved in disease and are believed to be a major contributor to accelerated aging.
Thirdly, alkaline water has a different structure to ordinary tap or bottled water. Water does not exist as a single molecule but as clusters of water molecules weakly bonded together: the more molecules in the cluster, the less energy in the water. Alkalizing the water reduces the size of the water clusters, resulting in water that is more readily absorbed in the body and also has more energy.

How Do You Make Alkaline Water?
There are 3 main ways to make healthy alkaline water with a high pH.
- By adding pH booster drops to the water you drink. This will give you some of the benefits associated with alkaline water, such as the increased pH, but it will not supply the antioxidant benefits or restructure your water. Nevertheless, it is a good option for when you are travelling or away from home.
- By using an electronic water ionizer. The first water ionizers were developed in Japan in the early 1960’s and their use has spread extensively since. They produce water that has alkaline antioxidant properties, but that water must be drunk immediately to gain its full benefits, making them somewhat impractical.
- By using alkaline filters. These filters use a range of special bioceramics made from naturally occurring minerals that react with your water to give it alkaline, antioxidant, restructured properties. These filter systems are much more affordable than electronic water ionizers and, since the water produced is often in the filter system until it is consumed, it retains its properties better.
