What’s H2 Molecular Hydrogen Good For?
You probably remember hydrogen from science class in school. Hydrogen is a non-metal mineral and for good reason, it’s the first atom in the periodic table. It was discovered in 1766 by Henry Cavendish. There are a total of 3082 known valid mineral species containing hydrogen. H2 can be found in seawater, the earth’s crust, the sun, the atmosphere and the solar system. Even crystals like muscovite and malachite contain hydrogen. Undoubtedly it’s an extremely important mineral, as it’s the most common element in the universe.
When combined with oxygen, hydrogen becomes water. So what’s the connection between a higher concentration of hydrogen and health? H2 molecular hydrogen is regular or filtered water with hydrogen gas added. Like regular water, hydrogen water has no calories, carbs, fat or protein. The science surrounding hydrogen water is quite limited at present, but some people find increased energy and tout its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In one study 49 participants drank hydrogen-rich water for six weeks during radiation therapy for liver cancer. Finding that it improved quality of life during the treatment.
Is Hydrogen Ionized Water Good For You?
In 2007 molecular hydrogen was found to have antioxidant properties. Since then there have been studies carried out on both animal and human models, to discover how hydrogen therapy might be used in clinical settings. Alongside insulin resistance, oxidative stress is an underlying cause of a wide range of chronic lifestyle-related diseases. The antioxidant properties of hydrogen provide a promising treatment for the oxidative stress-related disease without side effects.
Studies on the therapeutic effects of hydrogen to date are promising. In 1975 Dole M Wilson administered hydrogen gas to mice with skin tumours. The mice were exposed to the hydrogen gas for two weeks, discovering that hyperbaric hydrogen therapy reduced the skin tumours. Another 2007 study found that the antioxidant properties of Hydrogen can protect the brain against stroke by neutralizing hydroxyl radicals. While many studies have looked at the inhalation of hydrogen, hydrogen-rich water has similar (yet slightly slower) effects.
The Case for Hydrogen Water for Athletes
During and after exercise there is a marked increase in oxidative stress. The antioxidative function of the body is enhanced by consistent training. The antioxidant effects of drinking hydrogen water have been consistently demonstrated in rodent models. In one study gum disease was reduced in rats after 4 weeks of drinking hydrogen-rich water.
In another study, drinking molecular hydrogen water reduced oxidative stress in rodents. Clearly demonstrating the effectiveness of hydrogen water as an antioxidant. Studies have also been carried out on thoroughbred racehorses, who exercised on treadmills. Finding that hydrogen-rich water reduced markers for oxidative stress in horses.
How Long Does it Take Until Hydrogen Water Works?
While many studies carried out to date are done over several weeks or months. One study has found that hydrogen water is absorbed by the essential organs about three minutes after drinking. The researchers concluded that hydrogen water is quickly assimilated into living tissue and most of it will be metabolised an hour after drinking.
It’s important to note that hydrogen water will maintain most of its antioxidant capacity for up to eight hours. Similar to carbonated beverages, hydrogen will dissipate back into the air.
