Take magnesium, for example; a lack of magnesium can cause twitches, anxiety or a lack of sleep.

Are Hydro Tablets Any Good?


To figure this out, let’s look at the science.

In a study published in 2020, eight men and ten women between the age of 18-45 drank water only or water with electrolyte tablets.

One litre of fluid was consumed in one hour when they went to the research lab, roughly one week apart.

The study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of taking hydro tabs for fluid balance. The participants provided a urine sample for analysis, hourly for four hours post-exercise. 

The researchers found that electrolyte tablets can lead to improved fluid balance when compared to drinking water alone.

Interestingly, taking stronger hydro tabs made no difference to fluid balance.

It’s important that you consume a balanced hydro tab. In the past, there was a focus on sodium intake to balance fluid levels.

While sodium will aid in the absorption of water, taking it alone as your electrolyte booster can lead to an imbalance in potassium levels.

The Best Time of Day to Take Hydration Tablets


Hydro tabs can be taken before, during and after exercise to maintain optimal hydration. About 500ml to 1 litre per hour is optimal, especially when exercising in sunlight or extreme heat.

Drop a hydro tab into your water bottle and you’re sorted, simple as that. Best taken when working in humid conditions, hydro tabs are important for maintaining performance. In a rested state, additional electrolytes are not necessary. 

The main aim of hydro tabs is to reduce fluid loss. Therefore, the electrolyte drink should be taken at a rate that will replenish water and electrolytes that are released through sweat.

Electrolytes should be replenished during and after vigorous exercise. This will have the knock-on effect of better performance, wellbeing and hydration.

There is an ever-increasing body of evidence supporting the effectiveness of molecular hydrogen with overall inflammation in the body, as well as playing a role in various diseases and infection. Here is a very brief overview to pique your interest and perhaps look into it for yourself.

What is inflammation?

Acute inflammation is your body’s natural way of healing and repairing itself when it comes into contact with a harmful pathogen (bacteria or virus), allergens (from food, pollen, dust etc.), or you have an injury. 

An almost immediate response, acute inflammation is a first line of defence and relatively short-lived. It’s designed to get rid of any harmful agents via microcirculation.

This ensures swift delivery of leukocytes (a type of white blood cell) to the area of injury to remove the toxins and repair any damage. Once healing is established, your inflammatory response shuts down.

With acute inflammation, you can experience redness, increased heat, swelling, pain and loss of function. These are all your body’s way of fast-tracking, isolating and limiting the danger of the trauma or infection.

So, as you can see, this is self-preservation and designed to protect you. Issues arise when for various reasons, you develop low-level chronic (longer lasting) inflammation which can lead to an increased risk of infection and disease.

Lots of things can cause systemic inflammation including poor gut health leading to conditions such as leaky gut, a bad diet, exposure to environmental toxins, chronic stress, insomnia, smoking, obesity, and excessive alcohol consumption. The list goes on.

When there’s an imbalance, your system becomes overwhelmed, and regulatory pathways start to go haywire. You may have heard of free radicals and know that they can be harmful to health, but we also need them. Without a healthy ratio of antioxidants and free radical reactive oxygen species (ROS), your body cannot carry out various physiological processes.

Problems occur when this delicate balance is disturbed over a prolonged time. Antioxidant defences can’t keep up with increasing levels of ROS which generates inflammatory responses, which increase ROS even more.

Meanwhile, raised free radicals (oxidative stress) cause damage to cells and tissues and a vicious cycle ensues.

What is molecular hydrogen, and how can it reduce inflammation?

Molecular hydrogen is hydrogen gas (H2), found in trace amounts in the air. By all accounts, it has immense antioxidant capabilities but with a difference.

Compared to other antioxidants which can be less discriminating between targeting harmful free radicals and important signalling ROS species, H2 targets specific free radicals, protecting the cells from damage.

One of the most toxic and highly reactive radical species is known as hydroxyl, which indiscriminately attacks our molecules, damaging and killing them. Hydroxyl is present in significant amounts in many chronic diseases. By effecting cultured cells with extreme oxidative stress, researchers found that hydrogen (H2) can select and substantially reduce hydroxyl, protecting the cells.

H2 gas can also effectively and rapidly pass through biomembranes, reaching the centre of your cells

It is still not fully understood exactly how H2 works but it has selective anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic properties. Because it targets harmful ROS like hydroxyl and peroxynitrite, molecular hydrogen prevents DNA damage. It downregulates the expression of proinflammatory and inflammatory cytokines, reducing oxidative stress, and it also helps upregulate your cells’ antioxidant defence system.

The anti-inflammatory action of molecular hydrogen, along with its other capabilities, has the potential to positively affect various diseases, including metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and organ injury. Research in this continues, but so far, the results appear promising.

Molecular hydrogen and gut health

It appears that H2 is naturally produced in the gut through the fermentation of undigested carbohydrates by certain gut bacteria. Escherichia coli produces a substantial amount, but so far, little is known about the therapeutic effects of gastrointestinal H2.

Researchers have found that antibiotics can inhibit the production of H2 in the gut, and an animal study discovered that innate H2 production in the colon had anti-inflammatory effects on colitis

Hydrogen produced in the colon may also help to improve intestinal motor function, reducing food transit time, preventing constipation. Among other things, turmeric can encourage the production of H2 by gut bacteria, and some researchers hypothesise that hydrogen gas in the gut could play a role in preventing cardiovascular events.

Intestinal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury develops when the blood flow to the intestines decreases, followed by the re-establishment of the blood supply to the ischemic tissue. Potentially life-threatening intestinal I/R injury causes intestinal mucosal barrier dysfunction, increased oxidative stress and severe local and systemic inflammation as well as distant organ injury. For example, it may cause acute lung inflammation. 

Causes vary, but the only medical treatment for I/R is surgery, and it is thought that dysbiosis (unbalanced gut microbiota) plays a role. In one animal study, injected H2 solution reduced inflammation, oxidative stress and I/R injury.

H2 treatment has also been shown to reduce transplant induced intestinal injuries and alleviate colonic mucosal damage and postoperative constipation in animal studies.

A brief mention of COVID-19

According to researchers, at the cellular level, COVID-19 is characterised by a dysregulated inflammatory response of the immune system, excessive oxidative stress and impaired cellular function.

Molecular hydrogen has proven its healing capacity in these areas, and a mini-review in the ‘Journal of Translational Science‘ discusses the potential of hydrogen-rich water as a treatment for COVID patients alongside nitric oxide. You can read it here.

How is molecular hydrogen (H2) administered?

There are several ways molecular hydrogen can be successfully administered whether it’s orally as water, the gas is inhaled, or it’s injected or intravenously administered as a saline infusion.

Methods vary among researchers, and several positive studies have used hydrogen-rich water – water into which molecular hydrogen has been dissolved or released.

Cultured cell studies using hydrolysed water show that it can penetrate cellular membranes and function as an antioxidant in human liver cells.

Within other human cells, it has been able to modulate glucose uptake and insulin signalling. Human studies, including a pilot study on patients with RA, have had good results using HRW. It has displayed anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects in several studies for multiple diseases.

How to make your own hydrogen water

"The common denominator that underlies all modern theories of biological ageing is change in molecular structure and, hence, function." – Leonard Hayflick, Professor of Anatomy at the University of California, San Francisco, and researcher on ageing.

Research continues to try and determine the intricacies of the ageing process and what causes its acceleration. But whatever the reason, it's more of a synergistic process than just coming down to one thing.

There are several converging causes including free radical damage, gene expression and DNA changes; inflammation and mitochondrial function decline. Loss of Nrf2, which helps to upregulate our cells' antioxidant defence system, is also a contributor as well as reduced telomere length.

So it may be interesting to know that within the hundreds of studies looking into the benefits of molecular hydrogen (H2), it appears to have a positive effect on... all of these.

What causes ageing?


The exact way in which this important little molecule works is unknown. Still, it does appear to be a novel and powerful antioxidant which modulates gene expression, suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokines, reducing oxidative stress, activating the Nrf2 antioxidant transcription factor and mitigating cellular damage. 

Your diet, emotions, sleep patterns, alcohol and drug intake, weight, exposure to environmental toxins and socioeconomic status can all contribute to your ageing process. They can alter your DNA and gene expression and increase free radical damage and inflammation.

Research suggests that DNA changes throughout someone’s life can significantly increase their susceptibility to heart conditions and other age-related diseases.

Your gene expression and response to your lifestyle and environment can determine whether you will be prone to accelerated ageing.

It’s also a common belief that excessive oxidative stress (free radical damage) and prolonged low-level inflammation are precursors to chronic disease. This includes those associated with biological ageing such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, atherosclerosis and cancer.

So how can molecular hydrogen help?


In 2007, a groundbreaking article published in Nature altered the face of research on ageing. It revealed the powerful antioxidant capacity of hydrogen gas and its ability to protect cells from damage by selectively scavenging toxic free radicals. 

Acute free radical damage (or oxidative stress) causes inflammation and destruction to cells and tissues. Over time, this leads to all manner of chronic disease, including cancer. 

One of the most toxic and highly reactive radical species is known as hydroxyl, which indiscriminately attacks our molecules, damaging and killing them. By effecting cultured cells with extreme oxidative stress, researchers found that hydrogen (H2) can select and substantially reduce hydroxyl, protecting the cells

H2 gas can also rapidly pass through membranes, and these same researchers found that the inhalation of H2 vapour shielded the effects of oxidative stress and suppressed brain injury in mice.

Since 2007, several studies have shown that molecular hydrogen has healing potential that goes way beyond merely selecting hydroxyl. With its ability to successfully diffuse into cells and be non-toxic at high concentrations, H2 shows promise as an effective therapeutic for a catalogue of health issues and diseases including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s disease, cognitive impairment, heart and vascular disease, strokes, metabolic disease, liver damage, brain injury, and organ transplant.

Molecular hydrogen has shown an ability to control cell signalling and gene expression resulting in the suppression of inflammation and oxidative stress. It also appears to activate the Nrf2 antioxidant transcription factor, helping to reduce inflammatory injury.

H2 has the potential to improve the levels or activity of SIRT 1, one of the seven known intracellular proteins called sirtuins. These are integral to the ageing process, and are nicknamed ‘longevity proteins’. 

Telomeres are stretches of DNA and proteins that form the ends of our chromosomes. Each time our cells divide, the telomere length shortens. There’s a point at which they can’t get any shorter, and this ultimately results in cell death.

While telomere shortening is associated with tumour suppression, it is also linked to limited stem cell function, regeneration and organ maintenance during ageing. It’s also connected with an increased age-related chronic disease and cancer risk.

Once more, molecular hydrogen shows a promising ability to slow the ageing process, this time by modulating telomerase activity which is the enzyme responsible for maintenance of the length of telomeres.

Hydrogen-rich water may be effective 

While all this research is positive and ongoing, it’s important to note that it is a work in progress and remains inconclusive. Although there are some human studies, many tend to be small and animal or cultured cell-based. 

Hydrogen water is water into which molecular hydrogen has been dissolved or released, and some researchers have found the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties of H2 water to benefit quality of life and the ageing process.  

For example, cultured cell studies using hydrolysed water showed that it was able to penetrate cellular membranes and function as an antioxidant in human liver cells. Within other human cells, it was also able to modulate glucose uptake, insulin signalling and SIRT 1 activity, as well as protect telomeres from degradation. 

As H2-water has anti-oxidative effects which may help to inhibit age-related inflammation and tissue damage, researchers ran a trial to see if it could protect against ageing periodontal tissue in rats. After consuming hydrogen water up until 16 months, the experimental group of rats had lower levels of oxidative tissue damage compared to the controlled group who drank distilled water. 

Stress and other negative emotions take their toll on ageing too, and one 2018 study found that after drinking hydrogen water for four weeks, participants experienced improvements in mood and anxiety markers. It also enhanced the autonomic nervous system.

How to make your own hydrogen water

How to Make Molecular Hydrogen: Tips for Creating H2

Molecular hydrogen continues to be the subject of intense interest in the health world. To suggest, just a few years ago, that the smallest, most prevalent molecule in existence could be a possible solution to many of our health challenges might have seemed outlandish – but in fact, the medical evidence has been mounting in Asia for decades.

Molecular hydrogen – or H2 – is a medical gas which has a profound beneficial effect on several markers of health such as oxidative stress, lipid metabolism, inflammation, signalling pathways and apoptosis.

Although it has been used in clinical settings for many decades, particularly in Japan, only relatively recently have commercially-available products given us the opportunity to test its therapeutic potential for ourselves. In this blog, we intend to discuss ways and means of making molecular hydrogen and briefly summarise some of the literature on this topic.

How Does Molecular Hydrogen Work?


One of the main difficulties when it comes to speaking about molecular hydrogen is attempting to marshall the complex science into anything approaching intelligible language.

That’s because educating oneself about molecular hydrogen leads inevitably to the research papers (of which there are around 1,000), and if you’ve spent any time studying peer-reviewed journals, you’ll know just how difficult it is to a) make sense of them and b) convey and elucidate their contents in such a way that the layman can understand.

As evidence, let’s take just a few conclusions from studies conducted in the last decade: “Molecular hydrogen suppresses FcepsilonRI-mediated signal transduction and prevents degranulation of mast cells”; “Hydrogen gas improves survival rate and organ damage in zymosan-induced generalized inflammation model”; “Hydrogen-rich saline protects immunocytes from radiation-induced apoptosis.”

By far the most well-documented benefits of molecular hydrogen concern its anti-ageing, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergenic properties. Not only is H2 an antioxidant but it is a selective antioxidant, singling out the most damaging free radical – hydroxyl (OH) – and turning it into harmless H20.

In other words, molecular hydrogen reacts with strong oxidants while leaving other beneficial oxidants reactive.

A study published last year suggested molecular hydrogen could have a dramatic anti-fatigue effect, with Korean researchers suggesting hydrogen-rich water could be considered a safe remedy for chronic fatigue control.

This strengthened the results of an earlier study on elite athletes, which found that drinking hydrogen water before exercise reduced blood lactate levels and improved exercise-induced decline of muscle function.

What’s more, a study from 2018 found that four weeks of drinking hydrogen water resulted in improvements in mood, anxiety markers and autonomic nerve function, “suggesting that administration may offer an effective method to reinforce Quality of Life and maintain good health.”

Due to its wide-ranging actions, and the fact that it is not toxic even at high levels, it is perhaps unsurprising that molecular hydrogen therapy has been documented for conditions as diverse as myocardial injury, Parkin’s disease (in conjunction with regular medication), vascular ageing of the aorta, mood disorders, type 2 diabetes and even arthritis.

How to Make Molecular Hydrogen


There are many methods of producing molecular hydrogen, as evidenced by the multiple administration methods used in scientific studies. These include oral intake of hydrogen-rich water, intravenous drip infusion of hydrogen-rich saline, hydrogen baths (generally for topical conditions, i.e. skin disorders) and inhalation with 2-3% hydrogen gas.

The former is by far the most well-known, at least in non-clinical settings. Hydrogen-rich water is essentially water into which molecular hydrogen has been dissolved or released. The H2-generating agent can differ between bioceramic minerals or special H2 formulations (generally tablets) which emit the gas into the water.

Hydrogen water generations have appeared on the market in recent years, although these technologies – which utilise special membranes – are incredibly costly. A better alternative might be to purchase ready-to-drink hydrogen water, use a hydrogen water jug, a home water ionizer, or try special hydrogen-stimulating tablets which you add to water.

Molecular hydrogen tablets generally consist of a special form of elemental magnesium combined with natural organic acid which, after interacting with water, releases the bonds of H2O, creating millions of H2 nanobubbles with the added benefit of magnesium ions.

One of the main advantages of using molecular hydrogen tablets is that they provide a higher concentration of H2 – measured in parts-per-million rather than parts-per-billion.

HydroTab, a blend of magnesium and malic acid, has been shown to achieve a hydrogen concentration of 10 parts-per-million, the highest concentration in the industry. How to Measure Molecular Hydrogen

Measuring molecular hydrogen can be a costly process, particularly if you are using the typical method of detection: electrochemical gas sensors. However, one alternative is to use a hydrogen test kit in the form of a methylene blue-platinum colloid reagent.

The latter method has been exhaustively outlined in this 2012 paper. In essence, you add the blue reagent drops to hydrogen-rich water and wait for the water to clear.

What you should remember about H2 water is that it should be drunk within two hours of opening, and in fact, the sooner the better: with the passage of time, the molecular hydrogen concentration decreases incrementally.

Oh, and since we’re all about interesting facts, here’s an interesting one you mightn’t have known about: molecular hydrogen is one of three components of the interior of our solar system’s largest planets, namely Saturn and Jupiter!

Conclusion

The bio-benefits of molecular hydrogen warrant further investigation, but there is already enough information in the public domain for one to make an educated guess as to the effects they might conceivably have.

As a relatively new discovery, molecular hydrogen has been examined in over 500 peer-reviewed studies since 2007. Molecular hydrogen is the smallest element and lightest molecule.

It was discovered in the healing waters of Nordenau, Germany; Tlacote, Mexico; and Hita Tenryousi, Japan.

Hydrogen molecular gas exists in these springs as a result of water reacting with the alkali-earth metals or from bacteria and algae in the water that produce molecular hydrogen gas.

Molecular hydrogen is a tasteless and odourless gas that has potential therapeutic actions in essentially every organ in the human body. Indeed, it may be able to protect against 150 different diseases.

Metabolic Syndrome Study: Hydrogen Rich Water Reduces Oxidative Stress

Obesity, insulin resistance, impaired glucose tolerance, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure are collectively called metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome sufferers often end up with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

These three deadly disease are rampant in industrialised countries and is increasing in developing countries because of our unhealthy food production methods that we are exporting to them.

Oxidative Stress Causes Metabolic Syndrome

Researchers have established that oxidative stress contributes to the development of metabolic syndrome. If we can prevent or reduce the oxidative stress, we may manage to control the occurrence of metabolic syndrome and its accompanying evils.

Oxidative Stress in Stored Fat

Accumulated stored fat is packed with reactive oxygen species (or ROS), which are basically oxygen-containing molecules that have high oxidative reactivity with lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. These ROS then cause considerable oxidative stress in the stored fat.

Not only does oxidation increase, but antioxidative enzymes are reduced. This has been found to be a common cause of obesity-associated metabolic syndrome. In fact, it is one of the earliest signs that metabolic syndrome may develop.

Oxidative Stress Cause Insulin and Leptin Resistance

  • If the body has too much or too little of these hormones, or if it responds incorrectly to these hormones, metabolic syndrome occurs because they govern appetite control, energy expenditure, carbohydrate and fat metabolism, correct blood pressure, and blood glucose levels. There are two ways in which oxidative stress cause resistance to these essential energy and metabolism-related hormones:

  • Oxidative stress brings about insulin resistance within the fat tissue in which there is oxidative damage.

  • Oxidative stress in the brain causes insulin and leptin resistance throughout the body by attacking the brain's centres that help regulate these hormones. Mechanisms in the central nervous system and hypothalamus have been found to make important contributions to the body's levels and correct responses to these hormones. When researchers injected a substance that caused oxidative stress to the brains of animals, they found that the resulting oxidative brain stress produced glucose intolerance, blood pressure increase, and hormone resistance in the liver and throughout the body in just three days.

Oxidative Stress in the Brain

The brain is extremely strongly threatened by oxidative stress because it uses a huge amount of oxygen to carry out its normal functions.

Researchers have concluded that poor nutrition, or more precisely overnutrition, can trigger intracellular oxidative stresses, especially in the brain and central nervous system.

Hydrogen Rich Water to the Rescue

Hydrogen water is receiving a lot of attention for its seeming ability to combat oxidative stress. If it is true that it can control oxidation, then it can help prevent one of the biggest contributing factors to metabolic syndrome and its accompanying risk of cardiovascular disease.

One study discovered that 1.5 litres of hydrogen rich water, made by portable magnesium stick, reduced oxidation by approximately 40 per cent and cholesterol by 13 per cent.

An even earlier study concluded that hydrogen rich water could reduce the occurrence of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and could thereby prevent brain injury caused by oxidative stress.

It also established that hydrogen water, due to its small size and weight, was able to pass easily and quickly through membranes, which improved its potential as a powerful antioxidant.

There may, thus, be a way to prevent the brain damage that leads to the hormone resistance discussed above. Hydrogen water can scavenge for and neutralise free radicals that are responsible for oxidative damage to cells.

Hydrogen water also triggers the activation of the body's own antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione. It, therefore, enables the body to lead its own fight against oxidative stress by making available the enzymes that lead this fight.

Cautionary Notes

  1. Hydrogen water is not a magic bullet. Drinking litres of hydrogen water while stuffing your body with trans fats and empty refined carbohydrates is not a solution to metabolic syndrome. It will simply be overwhelmed by the oxidation caused by the unhealthy food. In addition to a healthy diet, however, it could be effective. Even better, if you used to lead an unhealthy lifestyle and have now changed your ways, it may help to undo the damage.
  2. The overwhelming majority of the research on hydrogen water is less than ten years old. While researchers have produced dozens of studies that have all confirmed the antioxidant properties of hydrogen water, the extent of its antioxidant power has not been well established. In other words, we know that it fights oxidative stress, but we do not know how well it does so. This is why you should not rely on it as a panacea against all oxidative damage until some long term studies have provided substantial proof. In the meantime, maintain a healthy diet and exercise program and use the hydrogen water as a supplement.

Assessing the Effectiveness of Hydrogen-Rich Water: How Beneficial Is It?

We originally wrote this blog in 2014, and back then it wasn't so much a blog as an introduction followed by a link to an open-label pilot study called 'Effectiveness of Hydrogen Rich Water on Antioxidant Status of Subjects with Potential Metabolic Syndrome'.

In the years since the publication of that particular paper, hydrogen-rich water has gone overground, becoming a hot topic in the wellness world not only as "a novel therapeutic and preventive strategy for metabolic syndrome", as suggested in that 2010 paper, but a possible therapeutic aid against all manner of health challenges.

In this article, we intend to summarise just some of the literature which has been published on this topic, and suggest ways in which the mighty antioxidant might be of value.

What Does Hydrogen-Rich Water Do?


As noted in the aforementioned 2010 study, “consumption of hydrogen-rich water for 8 weeks resulted in a 39% increase in antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) and a 43% decrease (p<0.05) in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in urine.

“Further, subjects demonstrated an 8% increase in high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol and a 13% decrease in total cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol from baseline to week 4.”

These results were noteworthy, to be sure, but there have been many studies since which have broadened our appreciation for just what hydrogen-rich water can do. Let us look firstly at some of the most recent ones.

• Effects of the long-term consumption of hydrogen-rich water on the antioxidant activity and the gut flora in female juvenile soccer players from Suzhou, China (2018): After 8 weeks of drinking hydrogen-rich water, subjects exhibited “significantly reduced serum malondialdehyde, interleukin-1, interleukin-6, tumour necrosis factor-? levels; then significantly increased serum superoxide dismutase, total antioxidant capacity levels and haemoglobin levels of whole blood.”

What’s more, “the consumption of hydrogen-rich water improved the diversity and abundance of the gut flora in athletes,” leading researchers to suggest that its “selective antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities” were responsible.

With gut diversity credited as one of the key metrics for overall health, this was an especially fascinating finding.

• Hydrogen-rich water for improvements of mood, anxiety, and autonomic nerve function in daily life (2018): The study aimed to assess the efficacy of drinking hydrogen-rich water on Quality of Life markers among adult volunteers. Researchers used psychophysiological tests including questionnaires and tests of autonomic nerve and cognitive function.

Subjects in the hydrogen-rich water group drank two glasses per day, for four weeks, while the placebo group drank regular water. Findings suggested that “administration for 4 weeks may have improved the Quality of Life of adult volunteers in terms of improved mood and anxiety and reduced activity of the sympathetic nervous system at rest.”

• Protective effect of hydrogen-rich water on liver function of colorectal cancer patients treated with mFOLFOX6 chemotherapy (2017) : The potential for hydrogen-rich water to mitigate against liver injury caused by this particular method of chemotherapy was studied, with the ‘damaging effects’ of mFOLFOX6 represented by increased ALT, AST and IBIL levels.

While “the hydrogen-rich water group exhibited no significant differences in liver function before and after treatment… the placebo group exhibited significantly elevated levels of ALT, AST and IBIL. Thus, hydrogen-rich water appeared to alleviate the mFOLFOX6-related liver injury.”

• Effects of hydrogen-rich water on depressive-like behaviour in mice (2016): Chinese researchers investigated the effects of drinking hydrogen-rich water on the depressive-like behaviour of mice exposed to chronic unpredictable mild stress. They concluded that “Hydrogen-rich water significantly attenuated the depressive-like behaviour exhibited by the stress group mice, suggesting that hydrogen-rich water may prevent the development and progression of depressive-like behaviour.

“Our data suggest that the beneficial effects of hydrogen-rich water on depressive-like behaviour may be mediated by suppression of the inflammasome activation resulting in attenuated protein IL-1? and ROS production.”

It’s not just dense, jargon-rife studies, either: with articles in Elle and Huffington Post, among others, hydrogen-infused water is becoming more well-known by the day.

How to Make Hydrogen-Rich Water

There are several ways of producing hydrogen-rich water, as demonstrated by the various administration methods favoured in scientific studies.

Options include hydrogen-rich water, intravenous drip infusion of hydrogen-rich saline, hydrogen baths (typically for topical conditions) and even inhalation with 2-3% hydrogen gas.

Suffice to say, though, that hydrogen-rich water is the route you want to go down: at least outside of a clinical setting. The only drawback is that most hydrogen water devices cost upwards of £1,000.
