Then, I learned that you can get an alkaline water filter jug. And it’s way cheaper! Bonus, right?! The thing is, I wasn’t really convinced until I tried it for myself.

Once I drank alkaline water, the old bottled spring water just doesn’t make the grade. Alkaline water tastes so refreshing.

But does it live up to it’s health claims? Let’s dive in and see what we can find out.

  • Alkaline Water

    What Exactly is Alkaline Water?

    You’ve most likely heard the words alkaline and pH in science class. The pH value of water can be either acid, alkaline (basic) or neutral.

    pH stands for power of hydrogen. Which basically tells you the concentration of hydrogen ions in the water.

    You can actually get hydrogen tablets and add them into your water. But you’d first want to make sure that your water is purified.

    That’s why an alkaline water machine or jug is the optimal way to make alkaline water.

    Alkaline water, as you might expect, is more basic. It has a pH higher than 7 which is neutral. Acidic water is more damaging to your body and has a pH of less than 7.

    Coca-cola, and other fizzy drinks have a pH of 2.6. Most alcoholic drinks are acidic, with the exception of Fix High Alkaline Vodka.

    Acidic drinks are harmful to your body and can rot your teeth by weakening the enamel. Conversely, alkaline water is on the other end of the spectrum, and can boost body and tooth health.

    The Benefits of Drinking Alkaline Water

    Many of the health benefits of drinking alkaline water stem from the negative oxidation reduction potential (ORP) value.

    Interestingly, a negative ORP is a good thing, and means that the water reduces oxidative stress.

    Water can either be antioxidative and boost health, or it can be pro-oxidative and reduce health.

    Municipal water cannot be too acidic, as that would damage the health of the people in their constituency. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises that tap water be kept within a pH of 6.5 to 8.5.

    Water that is acidic is often toxic and filled with heavy metals, pesticides and herbicides. That’s because the acid side of life is corrosive.

    Water that is too alkaline is also not safe. But consider this… lithium is given to people who are depressed, and also used to fuel batteries. Which means it’s filled with energy and life.

    Lithium has a pH of 11.3. Sulfuric acid (pH 0.5) is corrosive and can destroy delicate tissue. I think that says a lot about how alkaline water works to boost health.

    Alkaline water that is safe to drink usually has a pH of 8 or 9!

  • Pros and Cons of Using an Alkaline Water Filter

    When your body becomes too acidic it’s normally due to consuming processed food and drinks. This can weaken your body because the blood stream must stay in a very precise pH range (pH7.35 to 7.45). Your blood and organs will look for calcium to neutralise acids in the body.

    That’s why calcium carbonate is often prescribed to neutralise stomach acid. The problem is that calcium is required for muscle tone and also healthy bones, nails, hair and teeth, so using it up can damage the main structures of the body.

    There have been a few studies carried out by a scientist by the name of Daniel P. Heli, that have compared alkaline water, or alkaline tablets, to tap water or a placebo.

    In one 2010 study, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, Heli discovered that alkaline water is better at both hydration and boosting cardiovascular health in endurance performance athletes.

    A second study looked at alkaline water and tap water. In that study Heli found that the acid-base balance was enhanced when the participants drank alkaline water, when compared with tap water.

    Additionally, drinking alkaline water reduced acid reflux (heartburn). The researchers tested blood and urine and discovered that the pH was slightly acidic, which is optimal.

The CDC has said that although COVID-19 has been found in stool samples, the water treatment facilities are in place to remove or inactivate viruses. Furthermore, the chemicals used for treatment must also be removed before drinking for optimal health.

To date, the COVID-19 virus hasn’t been found in drinking water. Thanks to the filtration and disinfection procedures carried out on drinking water in the West.

Sewage Systems and the Living Machine


Sewage is a massive environmental challenge. Not least in times of a pandemic.

Some areas in Scotland use what’s known as “The Living Machine.” Which is an ecological sewage system that recycles waste matter. Waste is eaten by fish and algae inside their man-made machine, based on natural principles, by adding oxygen.

Can Swimming Pools or Hot Tubs Harbour Viruses?

There isn’t much chance of us catching a virus in the public swimming pool at the moment. Mainly because they’re all closed. But what if you’re fortunate enough to have your own private hot tub or swimming pool?

In this case, you might want to fully understand whether or not you could catch the coronavirus while bathing.

Most pools and hot tubs have proper disinfection protocols in place, for example they’ll be purified with chlorine and bromine.

Drinking Water and Waterborne Viruses


One thing that worries me is that 1.8 billion people were drinking fecally-contaminated water in 2012. This is the type of water that might be contaminated.

Some patients with COVID-19 have had their stools sampled, and the virus shed from the body has been found in fecal matter.

Thankfully, the current epidemic has not been found to carry much risk of transmission from feces. Hopefully, this continues to be the case.

Most of the viruses that transmit through drinking water are associated with abdominal cramping, such as rotavirus.

What’s the Best Way to Remove Viruses from Water?


Assessing the viral content of water is a costly process. However, currently in the US 99.99% of viruses must be removed or inactivated by law.

This means applying a suitable disinfectant dose. Which could mean that water municipals could increase the amount of disinfectant, to keep the water safe during a pandemic.

If this happens, it becomes ever more important to remove chlorine and chloramines from our drinking water.

Filtration alone will not remove viruses. However, it will remove disinfectants and chemicals used to clean the water at the municipal level.

Since the 1900s, the most common disinfectant for water is chlorine gas in water. Chlorine will kill most viruses instantly.

Lots of water treatment plants are moving towards the use of monochloramine (chlorine plus ammonia). Certain viruses will not be deactivated by monocholoramine (such as adenovirus).

Another minor issue is that water might be pathogen-free when it leaves the treatment facility, but then pick up nasties on its journey through our pipes. UV treatment is another valuable solution to cleanse our water of pathogens.

Identifying Viruses in Water

There are many sophisticated ways to identify viruses in our water supply. However, they’re time-consuming and expensive.

Scientists grow the residue from a water sample in cell culture, and most tests can take up to 10 days to produce results. Even if the water was tested for specific viruses (in most cases it isn’t) then it would take a lot of work to produce reliable results.

Thankfully, most water municipalities in the west have high-tech water disinfection protocols. And the resulting toxic residue can be removed with a high-quality water filter.

Final Thoughts

Although adding toxic chemicals to our water supply is not nice, it’s essential to kill pathogens and viruses.

There is no way to 100% ensure that your water is free from viruses or pathogens, however, the water municipals deploy several protocols.

Taking the extra step to filter and purify water when it arrives in your home can offer additional protection against any waterborne illness and toxic residue.

How to Avoid the Dangerous Waterborne Parasite Cryptosporidium

Cryptosporidium – commonly referred to as just ‘Crypto’ – is a microscopic parasite that lives naturally inside of animals. It is very common to find Crypto in lakes and ponds in the countryside, where it passes through and is deposited into the water via animal waste.

Crypto’s ubiquity means it also frequently makes its way into reservoirs and other water supplies. It has a nasty tendency to appear in swimming pools; especially during the summer holidays.

What’s disturbing about this parasite is that it seems to have evolved a defence mechanism to resist cleaning agents. For example, Crypto has a protective “shell” that even chlorine is unable to breakdown. Once it contaminates a water supply, infection can spread quickly. In 2016, more than 223 people in Devon and Dorset fell ill to an outbreak that stemmed from a contaminated swimming pool, causing illness, diarrhoea and other misery.

Most symptoms are aggressive — vomiting, diarrhoea and fever — but relatively short lived. But in immunocompromised people, Crypto can actually be fatal.

Given the extent that Crypto can be found throughout the natural world, and especially in the UK, the parasite’s reputation is perhaps underrated. Mention the term to a friend or family member, and it is highly unlikely they will even have heard of it. No wonder cases of the parasite is increasing.

With this in mind, what can actually be done to avoid catching the Crypto bug?

Avoiding Cryptosporidium


Some of the main causes of Crypto come from public swimming pools and through touching animals, or swimming in water sources that are contaminated (usually this means water filled with animal waste).

In the case of swimming pools, the disturbing truth is, the parasite often gets in via other (contaminated) swimmers defecating or urinating in the pool.

If you still want to go swimming after reading this, keep your head above the water, and definitely do not swallow the pool water!

Animals carry many pathogens, you should wash your hands after touching them anyway — including even the cat and the dog. As for the third main cause of infection, the same rules as for the swimming pool apply.

Cryptosporidium at Home

More insidiously, however, Crypto can get into our own water supply at home. This can happen when regular drinking water is contaminated with sewage overflows, or when the sewage systems are not working properly.

A bad storm, or excess agricultural run-off, can all place the parasite squarely in our homes.

The best way to deal with the parasite then, is to be vigilant. In the shower and the bath, try not to expose your eyes or mouth to the parasite. This is easier said than done, but not impossible. And can even become second nature after a few weeks of conscious practice.

The biggest problem — you might be thinking — is that such vigilance basically puts an end to drinking tap water at home. Not quite. Water filters are a good block to the parasite, and keep it out along with other pollutants.

You can also use cartridges and tablets to safely cleanse Crypto, so you can keep drinking water from the tap quite comfortably.

If you suspect a contamination in the house, contact your water supplier.

Another way Crypto can make its way into the home is after making its way into your pet first. Be mindful, and especially when letting your pet outside (and especially if you are taking the dog for a walk), not to let it drink anything that you wouldn’t drink.

Dealing with a Cryptosporidium Infection

Inside the body, Cryptosporidium can cause an illness called cryptosporidiosis. Symptoms typically last about two weeks but can go on for a month. That’s a long time to be ill. Fortunately, in most cases, the body can kick out the pathogen without any outside help.

In other cases, antiparasitic medication may be needed. In order to curtail the spread of the parasite, it is important not to return to work for at least 48 hours after showing symptoms — and especially if you work with the elderly, the ill, or children. If you suspect you have the parasite speak to your GP, who may be able to at least offer you painkillers for the abdominal cramps.

In most cases, the only way to beat cryptosporidiosis is to ride it out. This includes drinking plenty of fluids to replace those lost as diarrhoea and vomiting, to remain hydrated and keep your body mineralised.

It is estimated that a quarter of us is at risk of becoming infected by the Crypto bug at any one time. Don’t let it happen.

Glyphosate is one of the best-selling and most used herbicides worldwide. It is the active ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup and countless other weedkillers. These herbicides are commonly used in farming, and public spaces like parks, streets, schools and playgrounds. They are also used domestically in gardens and on allotments.

Glyphosate weed killers like Roundup are used in the production of genetically modified crops. GMOs are herbicide-resistant, but the weeds and other natural vegetation growing around them are not. Glyphosate is designed to move throughout non-GMO plants and kill them by blocking the plant's ability to make proteins.

In this article, we'll discuss the increasing problem of glyphosate in drinking water – and why you'd be well-served removing it.

The widespread use of Glyphosate


Worryingly, the use of glyphosate is not exclusively used on GMO crops and is approved in Europe, including the UK, for many other purposes.

According to the Friend’s of the Earth Europe (FOEE), it is also allowed for use in vineyards, olive groves, fruit orchards, grass pastures, forestry and sensitive habitats (think of the effect this has on wildlife).

It is sprayed on cereal crops including wheat and oats, oilseed rape, maize and sunflowers. It is everywhere.

The FOEE also state “based on what has happened in the United States since the introduction of GM crops, it has been predicted that the introduction of GM glyphosate-resistant sugar beet, maize and soybean in the European Union could lead to an 800% increase in glyphosate use by 2025, with overall herbicide use going up by 72% compared to current levels.”

Glyphosate has significant health and cancer risks


In 2015, the World Health Organisation (WHO) stated that “Glyphosate currently has the highest global production volume of all herbicides” and over recent years, a growing number of scientific studies have raised concerns over this invasive herbicide. 

This year, Austria was the first EU country to ban glyphosate entirely. According to Reuters, the leader of Austria’s Social Democrats, Pamela Rendi-Wagner, said “The scientific evidence of the plant poison’s carcinogenic effect is increasing. It is our responsibility to ban this poison from our environment.”

In 2018, a US jury awarded £226million to a man who claimed Monsanto herbicides containing glyphosate had caused his cancer.

According to the BBC, jurors in San Francisco found that the company’s weedkillers contributed “substantially” to the terminal illness of groundskeeper Dewayne Johnson, diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2014. He regularly used a form of RangerPro while working at a school in Benicia, California.

The ruling said that the potential product risks were known to Monsanto who failed to adequately warn of the danger. The jurors found that the company had acted with “malice” and a product label providing warning of the potential health dangers should have been given. 

In 2019, a US federal jury in California ruled that Monsanto’s Roundup, which he had sprayed for nearly 30 years, was responsible for Edwin Hardeman’s non-Hodgkins lymphoma. On the back of this, several UK councils have growing concerns about the safety of glyphosate products which they have been using in public spaces for years and are looking to phase them out. Fingers crossed.

According to a 2008 Swedish study, exposure to glyphosate can triple the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Researchers also found that there is a latency period between exposure and diagnosis and the risk increases after ten years of glyphosate exposure

There’s no denying that Monsanto and organisations like the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) state that glyphosate “is not carcinogenic to humans” but many people believe that research showing this is often paid for by Monsanto or biased towards them for various reasons.

Environmental Sciences Europe published a report in January 2019 showing that the EPA ignored scientific research showing that glyphosate causes cancer. The EPA’s opinion on the cancer-glyphosate risk is polar to that of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) who classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans (Group 2A).” 

The IARC concludes there is “strong evidence” that exposure to glyphosate is genotoxic through at least two mechanisms known to be associated with human carcinogens (DNA damage and oxidative stress).

Glyphosate has caused DNA and chromosomal damage in human cells and one study in community residents reported increases in blood markers of chromosomal damage (micronuclei) after glyphosate formulations were sprayed nearby.

The EWG also states that since the 2015 IARC assessment (associated with WHO), an additional 26 of 27 studies have been published showing evidence that glyphosate can be genotoxic (affecting DNA and RNA in animals and humans).

Additionally, in 2017, California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment listed glyphosate as a chemical “known to the state of California to cause cancer.”

There is also convincing evidence that glyphosate can cause cancer in laboratory animals, including cancerous tumours.

Glyphosate can wreck gut health & contribute to chronic disease

Research shows that glyphosate has detrimental effects on gut microbiota, can inhibit the activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes, and likely impair sulfate transport.

In the words of the report, this can “remarkably explain a great number of the diseases and conditions that are prevalent in the modern industrialised world. Its effects are insidious because the long-term effects are often not immediately apparent.

“The pathologies to which glyphosate could plausibly contribute, through its known biosemiotic effects, include inflammatory bowel disease, Entropy 2013, 15 1445 obesity, depression, ADHD, autism, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, multiple sclerosis, cancer, cachexia, infertility, and developmental malformations.”

They close by saying:

“Given the known toxic effects of glyphosate reviewed here and the plausibility that they are negatively impacting health worldwide, it is imperative for more independent research to take place to validate the ideas presented here, and to take immediate action, if they are verified, to drastically curtail the use of glyphosate in agriculture.

Glyphosate is likely to be pervasive in our food supply, and, contrary to being essentially nontoxic, it may, in fact, be the most biologically disruptive chemical in our environment.”  

Research also links glyphosate to Parkinson’s disease. Other ingredients in glyphosate products such as Roundup are toxic and harmful, even without glyphosate. Distressingly, when mixed with glyphosate, the toxicity is magnified.

Researchers claim that “the proprietary mixtures available on the market could cause cell damage and even death around residual levels to be expected, especially in food and feed derived from R formulation-treated crops.”

Glyphosate residues are showing up in people


In August of this year, newly developed long-term exposure hair testing of 23 Japanese politicians revealed exposure to a host of pesticides and herbicides, the most alarming of which was glyphosate and its metabolite AMPA (also harmful).

Apparently, the test revealed much higher levels of contamination than ever detected with blood and urine testing. 

Aside from concerns about food safety, foreign wheat imports were called out due to the practice of pre-harvest spraying, a frequently used technique that non-organic farmers use to dry out crops before harvesting.

In 2013, FOEE performed research which detected glyphosate residues in the urine of 44% of people tested, from 18 different European countries

A 2019 review of 19 studies set out to determine the levels of exposure to glyphosate in both those who work with it and the general population.

Eight studies showed urinary levels of glyphosate in both occupationally and para-occupationally exposed participants. Fourteen studies reported evidence of glyphosate in various biofluids (such as blood, urine, sweat, breast milk) of 3,298 people from the general population.

Only two studies in this review looked at exposure over time, but both showed increasing proportions of individuals with detectable levels of glyphosate in their urine.

Clearly, there’s not enough research investigating the amount of glyphosate exposure we are subjected to via our environment and food chain. And who knows the potentially destructive effects it can have on infants and children?

Glyphosate is in your drinking water


A 2017 Chief Inspector’s Report for drinking water in England showed two failures by water companies to keep glyphosate levels within the European or national standard. 

Firstly, given the lack of research in the area of exposure and its long-term effects, how do we know that these standards are safe?

Secondly, the water companies put the failures down to domestic use of glyphosate but could it just have easily have been down to its widespread use in farming and by local councils?

According to Pesticide Action UK, studies by the UK government show that pesticide concentrations exceed those allowable for drinking water in some samples of river water and groundwater (it’s heartbreaking to think of all the wildlife living in and off this water).

Pesticides and herbicides, including glyphosate, can be washed by rain into ditches, rivers and streams (surface waters). They might also get washed down through soil and rock and into underground water sources (groundwater).

Urban run-off from pavements, parks, schools and gardens can likewise flow into waterways. Surface waters can run off into reservoirs and groundwater contributes to roughly 30% of UK drinking water. 

FOEE state that The European Glyphosate Environmental Information Sources (EGEIS) summarised surface water monitoring data from 1993-2009 for thirteen European countries.

Over 50,000 samples were included, and glyphosate was found in 29% of these samples.

Residues of glyphosate’s breakdown product (AMPA) were found in 50% of samples (this comes with its own collection of health concerns. Look it up.) 

This is just a small proportion of the mounting information and evidence that’s out there concerning contamination of our waterways. In the US, where GMO crops are more widely used, glyphosate contamination is higher.

It’s worrying to think that should GMO glyphosate-resistant produce become approved in the EU, glyphosate contamination, not just of water but throughout the environment, could become much more widespread

Glyphosate is lurking in your food


As well as using Roundup and other herbicides to clear the weeds, farmers are also using glyphosate to dry out the crops shortly before harvest. It helps hasten the ‘dry down’ (particularly when damp or wet), controls grain weeds and kills crops that haven’t ripened evenly.

This speeds up threshing practice as it enables combine harvesters to move faster and cover more ground. 

Unfortunately, as the Soil Association points out, this also means glyphosate residues in the crops are likely to be higher. And these end up on your plate.

When you think about all the crops glyphosate is allowed to be used on in Europe, it is in your wine, olive oil, on your fruit and vegetables, in your cereal, porridge and bread, and on your seeds. And the rest.

To reduce your intake of glyphosate and other chemicals, it’s advisable to buy organic wherever possible. Can’t buy organic? You can at least try to avoid the Dirty Dozen, by checking the annually updated list by the EWG of the most heavily sprayed fruit and vegetables. 

How else might I be exposed to glyphosate?

You can be heavily exposed to glyphosate if you work directly with it or are exposed to it in your work environment. For those of us in the general population, we are exposed to it environmentally. 

Imagine if you are living in a rural area with heavy crop spraying, or are relaxing with family and friends in your local park while glyphosate is being used nearby, and mists of the weedkiller drift by on the breeze? 

Children, dogs and cats, other pets, birds, insects and wild animals could be lying and walking barefoot where it is sprayed on the grass.

Pets and wildlife are at risk if they touch or eat plants that are still wet with spray from products containing glyphosate.

Conclusion

While many things in life are beyond our control, if we are informed about certain things, we can decide what – if anything – we can do about them.

When it comes to glyphosate, there are practices you can put in place to protect yourself and your family. Overall, think about the accumulation of exposure from different sources and do your best to limit this.

Using a superior water filter that removes glyphosate and other herbicides or pesticides, along with any other undesirable contaminants in tap water, is a very good idea. 

Wherever possible, eat organic. These foods aren’t sprayed with glyphosate. A bonus is that glyphosate demineralises the soil and organic soil is much higher in minerals. This benefits both you and the environment.

If eating organic isn’t feasible, get savvy about the most heavily sprayed fruits and vegetables and try to avoid them. The EWG provides an annually updated list of the most heavily sprayed ones. Although it is American, it’s still a helpful guide for those of us in Europe. 

Use organic, natural treatments on your allotment and in your garden and petition your local council to find safer alternatives to glyphosate and other harmful herbicides and pesticides.

9 Reasons to Install a Tap Water Filter, Including for Microplastics

Many of us associate water contamination with the Third World. However, unless you’re using a high-quality tap water filter you’re at risk of drinking water that is far from pure.

While tap water in the UK is cleaner and fresher than in many parts of the world, pollutants are not uncommon.

Whether you’re concerned about lead leaching, chlorine, fluoride, microplastics or any other unnatural component of drinking water, you’ve every right to ensure the water you’re sipping every day meets your approval.

1. To Remove Heavy Metals

Many people still have lead pipes in their homes because, prior to 1970, most underground service pipes connecting the street’s water main to your tap were made from lead. Thus, the risk of lead contamination is very real for those residing in older properties.

The specific health risks associated with an accumulation of lead in the body should never be underestimated. Younger people are particularly vulnerable due to the metal’s damaging impact on mental development, but truthfully no-one should be apathetic about ingesting ultimately poisonous lead particles.

If you’re unsure whether your property has lead pipes, you can request for the water company to test the water at your tap; companies will typically provide a report of any such analysis in your local area free of charge, upon request.

Although a 2013 study found lead consumption from drinking water to be “generally low and unlikely to have a significant impact on human health when considered in isolation,” there are many ways we can inadvertently ingest lead, such as from inhaling dust that contains it or handling toys and other household items painted before 1976.

The Medical Research Council also states that there is “no evidence of a safe level” for lead in the human body.

Of course, lead is not the only heavy metal you should be wary of. While developing countries are most affected by heavy metals in drinking water, traces of cadmium, chromium, mercury and even arsenic have been found in water tested in the United Kingdom and Europe.

Heavy metals can work their way into your tap water via industrial, municipal or urban runoff.

2. To Remove Bacteria

Many people were stunned to learn, just a couple of years ago, that their tap water could be home to millions of bacteria.

Although the Swedish researchers involved in the study did not deem the microscopic bacteria to be harmful, illnesses occur from harmful microorganisms in drinking water every year.

One such bacteria, M. Avium paratuberculosis (MAP), may be leaching into the domestic water supply via run-off from land into rivers and groundwater, and another – a protozoan called cryptosporidium – is known to cause gastrointestinal upset.

Although efforts are made to ensure UK tap water is free from harmful bacteria, United Utilities – the country’s largest listed water company – have said “it is impractical to analyse drinking water directly for the wide range of pathogens that could be present.”

3. To Remove Hormones

We have blogged before about hormones in tap water, and it’s yet another reason why some people elect to install a high-quality filter.

Traces of hormones, including endocrine-disrupting birth control hormones (estrogen), have been discovered in urban and suburban water supplies in Britain and further afield, suggesting they are beyond the scope of municipal filtration systems.

Synthetic estrogen is especially damaging, as it has been shown to wreak havoc on the reproductive systems of fish, leading to offspring sporting both male and female sexual organs. It has also negatively impacted the fertility of male fish.

A University of Pittsburgh study, meanwhile, learned that human breast cancer cells grew twice as rapidly when exposed to estrogen sourced from catfish snared close to untreated sewage overflows.

The question, then, is obvious: why drink water which may contain traces of endocrine-disrupting hormones – hormones that could increase cancer risk and reduce male fertility? Hormones that disrupt the natural balance of hormones in the body?

With sewage processing for estrogen removal notoriously difficult, the potential dangers of consuming even low concentrations of estrogen via tap water are clear.

4. To Remove Microplastics

Microplastics in tap water is another subject we have covered in our blog, although the scale of the problem only really came to light last year.

An investigation by Orb Media found that over 80% of tap water samples collected on five continents tested positive for plastic fibres. This included almost three-quarters of samples collected from water supplies throughout Europe.

Because the phenomenon has only recently come to light, no-one is yet clear on exactly what harm could come from ingesting microplastic fibres throughout one’s lifetime. However, it does not take a rocket scientist to speculate that the outcome is unlikely to be positive.

After all, non-biodegradable plastic is made from toxic compounds such as BPA (another endocrine disruptor) and has been shown to release toxic chemicals known to cause cancer and other illnesses.

Moreover, microplastics have a habit of absorbing toxic elements and can attract bacteria (see #2) from sewage. As noted in the Orb Media report, there is evidence to show that microplastic particles can penetrate the intestinal wall, travel to organs and penetrate cells.

According to a 2017 report published in the peer-review journal Environmental Science & Technology, “Although microplastics and human health is an emerging field, complementary existing fields indicate potential particle, chemical and microbial hazards.

“If inhaled or ingested, microplastics may accumulate and exert localized particle toxicity by inducing or enhancing an immune response.

“Chemical toxicity could occur due to the localized leaching of component monomers, endogenous additives, and adsorbed environmental pollutants.

“Chronic exposure is anticipated to be of greater concern due to the accumulative effect that could occur.”

Bottled water may seem like a valid solution, but a 2018 test of major brands found that “nearly all of them” contained microplastics. Analysis uncovered an average of 10 particles per litre, each larger than the width of a human hair.

Using a tap water filter to remove this pervasive material is a no-brainer.

5. To Remove Chlorine and Chloramine

Water is of course local, running as it does from the municipality’s supply. Water quality therefore varies depending on where you live (rural or urban area), the filtering processes in place etc.

You’ll find chlorine or chloramine in much of the tap water available throughout Britain, as well as in Europe and the United States.

Chlorine is used by the water industry to reduce waterborne pathogens, however aside from many people being sensitive to its unpalatable taste and smell, there are concerns that it should not be ingested even in modest concentrations (most water companies aim to keep the level below 1 mg/litre).

Research conducted by universities in Taiwan and Birmingham found that expectant mothers could expose themselves to serious risks by drinking chlorinated water, due to chemical by-products of water chlorination called trihalomethanes (THMs).

THMs were linked to three separate birth defects, significantly increasing the risk of holes in the heart, cleft palates and anencephaly (the absence of a major portion of the brain and skull).

Chlorine has also been linked to a heightened risk of cancer. Even showering and swimming increases one’s risk.

As well as a water filter to remove chlorine from the tap, you might consider a dechlorinating shower filter.

Chloramination is another method of treating drinking water, widely practised in the UK. A combination of chlorine and ammonia, it offers more stability than chlorine and lasts longer in the water system.

However, it has also been shown to corrode ageing lead and copper pipes/valves, thereby causing metals to leach into tap water.

In common with chlorine, chloramines entail a cancer risk by forming a great many toxic byproducts, including chlorine dioxide, iodacetic acid and the carcinogen N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). Anecdotal evidence suggests a link between chloramines and dermatological, respiratory and digestive issues.

Campaigner Denise Johnson-Kula, president of Citizens Concerned About Chloramines, estimates that around 30% of people encounter side effects “within one month” of their cities switching to chloramines.

Rather than industrially treating water with chemicals like chlorine and chloramine, some alternative filters remove pollutants via methods such as carbon adsorption and enhanced sedimentation. This is becoming an ever more attractive option for people concerned about the consequences of ingesting both disinfectant chemicals.

6. To Remove Fluoride

Fluoride is a rather touchy subject; some people believe it is beneficial (specifically for dental health) while others consider it a form of mass medication forced upon a captive, docile public.

This polarising response means that initiatives seeking to commence the fluoridation of formerly non-fluoridated areas provoke a hostile response from citizens’ groups.

Indeed, no new fluoridation schemes have been approved in Britain for two decades. That said, 11% of Brits still receive artificially fluoridated tap water, mostly in the West Midlands and the North-East. 75% of Ireland’s population also receive fluoridated water.

One outspoken critic of water fluoridation was Barry Groves, researcher and author of Fluoride: Drinking Ourselves to Death? According to Groves, “Fluoridation is the longest, most expensive and most spectacularly unsuccessful marketing campaign ever to come out of the United States.

This is an example of a cynical alliance between industrial leaders, mainstream science and the politicians we elect, which shows complete contempt for public health and welfare.”

If you live in a fluoridated area and want to avoid it, you have three options: move; drink bottled water; or install a water filter.

7. To Remove Pharmaceutical Compounds

Yes, there are drugs in your drinking water. According to a 2016 review carried out by researchers at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, “current drinking water treatments cannot completely remove some drugs of abuse.”

Trace levels of compounds “have the potential to bioaccumulate and be toxic to humans.”

So which pharmaceuticals are we talking about here? At a glance they include antibiotics, psychoactive substances like benzoylecgonine (the metabolised form of cocaine), painkillers such as ibuprofen and paracetamol, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, dishwasher detergent chemicals, even tranquillisers.

The situation isn’t much better Stateside: a review published in February 2017 found a staggering 118 pharmaceuticals in drinking water samples from 25 treatment plants.

Perhaps the largest concern is the soup effect. Traces of this pharmaceutical drug laced with traces of that, mixed with synthetic hormones, microplastic fibres, bacteria, protozoa and heavy metals equals…what exactly? We simply do not know.

A brew not naturally intended for human consumption, of that we can be sure. And we cannot rule out that this bizarre concoction is interacting with the medication we’re intentionally taking, compromising its efficacy or causing adverse symptoms.

8. To Alkalise the Water

Mainstream medical opinion has been skeptical of alkaline water, but many people have enjoyed great benefits.

Alkaline water has a significant Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP), which can neutralise free radicals, oxygen-containing molecules linked with chronic disease. What’s more, drinking alkaline water has been shown to deactivate pepsin, the primary enzyme that causes acid reflux.

One of the main benefits purported to come from drinking alkaline water is in terms of anti-ageing. There have been a few interesting studies into this, including one published in 2016.

Although the subjects were mice, researchers noted that “there is enough experimental evidence to conclude that the treatment significantly affects the mice longevity; in particular alkaline water provides a benefit to longevity in terms of deceleration aging factor as it decreases the hazard functions when compared with the control group.”

It should be noted that water passing over rocks in mountain springs is rich in minerals and alkaline by nature. Claims of it being a fad are therefore wide of the mark, since our Palaeolithic ancestors would have drunk naturally alkaline water.

Because water exiting British taps is usually neutral, using an alkalising water filter is a surefire way of consistently obtaining water with an alkaline pH from your kitchen tap.

9. To Infuse Water with Molecular Hydrogen (Active H2)

Hydrogen-rich water has been marketed as a New Age wellness water, but in principle it’s quite simple: it is water which contains a surplus of dissolved hydrogen gas. They’ve been drinking it in Japan for decades.

Because hydrogen is the smallest, lightest element in the periodic table, it has the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and enter the energy centres of cells, whereupon it is able to tackle those aforementioned pesky free radicals.

In one oft-cited study, drinking just two litres per day of hydrogen water for a fortnight provoked a 43% drop in thiobarbituric acid, a marker of oxidative damage, and a 13% drop in total cholesterol.

A scattering of animal and human studies, meanwhile, suggest drinking hydrogen water can improve everything from energy levels to post-workout recovery times, not to mention reduce inflammation and protect against neurodegenerative changes induced by traumatic brain injury.

While more research is needed – particularly to determine how much hydrogen is required to exert a positive effect, as well as how often it must be drunk in order to do so – the potential of hydrogen-infused water is enormous.

Although drinking water filters are quite common, only a few are able to stimulate the release of molecular hydrogen.

Choose to Drink Better Water

Water Filters for Plastics: Necessary or Not?

We have often written about the health benefits of drinking clean water, and the necessity of using a good-quality filter if the water from your tap is not up to scratch.

Many of our customers are concerned only with removing fluoride, though others – like us – note an aversion to unnatural components such as oestradiol, trace pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, chloramine – the list goes on and on.

And to that list we can now add plastics.

Plastics in Tap Water: An Emerging Problem


The news that plastic fibres were showing up in increasing quantities in tap water broke a few months back. The long-ranging investigation, carried out by Orb Media, led to calls from scientists for meaningful research on the risks of ingesting these tiny plastic particles. Little wonder, right?

Plastic pollution – and its toxic impact on humans and wildlife – is of course no secret. According to the Plastic Pollution Coalition, by 2050 our oceans will be so choked with plastic that they’ll contain more plastic than fish by weight. This is not a nascent phenomenon.

That said, few would have anticipated that microscopic plastic fibres could be feeding into our drinking water. Our oceans, yes, our estuaries and rivers and lakes, but not the clear liquid that is available to us at the turn of a tap.

The study by Orb Media is the first of its kind. The organisation, working in tandem with a researcher from the University of Minnesota’s School of Public Health, was shocked to learn that over 80% of samples collected on five continents tested positive for plastic fibres. Even water derived from natural springs contained incredibly high levels of contamination.

The United States had the worst contamination rate (94%) – worse even than India and Lebanon. Ironically, plastic fibres were discovered in tap water taken from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency headquarters.

European countries had the lowest rate of contamination, although this was hardly cause for celebration given that 74% of water tested still contained plastic. The average number of fibres in each 500ml sample was 4.8 for the States and 1.9 for Europe, and the analysis caught particles of more than 2.5 microns in size.

Why Should We Worry About Microplastics in Water?


It’s obvious that we should care about plastic pollution in general: it ruins our groundwater, poisons our marine and plant life and piles up in landfills, where it releases hazardous chemicals into the atmosphere. But some might wonder why we should care about microscopic fragments entering our water supply.

This can be answered rather easily by pointing out that plastic is composed of major toxic compounds known to cause illness.

One such compound is BPA, a notorious endocrine disruptor, while vinyl chloride and styrene monomers are mutagenic and carcinogenic.

Many people don’t for a second realise that harmful elements such as solvents, catalysts, initiators and polymerisation additives form such a large part of plastic production.

Furthermore, microplastics leach and absorb toxic chemicals from the environment which are linked to cancer and other health conditions.

In fact, microplastics are more prone to absorb toxic elements than larger fragments. They can also attract bacteria found in sewage, with a greater number of pathogens found downstream of wastewater treatment facilities.

As Orb Media highlighted in their report, studies prove that such particles can migrate through the intestinal wall, travel to the lymph nodes and other organs, and penetrate cells.

Of course, it’s likely you are already ingesting microplastics in food, since they have been found in a third of British-caught fish, from haddock and prawns to cod and mackerel. Some species are even said to now prefer polystyrene particles over their natural food source, zooplankton! Needless to say, plankton support the entire marine food chain.

It’s not just fish either. Microplastic fibres have been found in beer, of all things. They’ve appeared, too, in honey and sugar. The mind wonders at what else we’re eating which contains microscopic kernels of plastic.

Plastic in our water, in our seafood, in the atmosphere and now in our drinking water. In lieu of a large-scale human study on the dangers of ingesting nano-scale plastic particles, we can surmise without ambiguity that the implications for our health are not good.

This suspicion is shared by Frank Kelly, professor of environment health at King’s College London, who last year voiced concern to a UK parliamentary inquiry, stressing the potential cost for our lungs and circulation of inhaling microplastics.

Water Filters for Plastics: Are They Needed?

We have water filters for hard water, dirty water, water containing chemicals, hormones, chlorine and bacteria. Now people will wonder whether they also need to invest in a water filter which removes plastic particulates. After all, what is the alternative? Hoping you are in the minority whose water contains no microplastics? Staking your health on a belief that the damage caused by these unnatural elements is minimal? It is not a nice situation to be in.

In any case, avoiding the consequences of plastic pollution by drinking bottled water clearly doesn’t make much sense.

Drinking bottled water as a means of avoiding microplastics was further discredited after a large-scale investigation found that almost all brands contained microplastics! Researchers from Orb Media, following up on their original analysis, found an average of 10 plastic particles per litre, “each larger than the width of a human hair.”

Simply put, plastic is pervading the global water supply.

Conclusion

Whether you think water filters for plastics are necessary or not, this latest piece of research is sure to lead to greater understanding about what constitutes good healthy water.

As an aside, the problem of microplastics more generally was highlighted in October, 2018, when tiny particles were found in human stools for the first time. Based on this study, researchers speculated that perhaps 50% of the global population might have microplastics in their stools. Clearly this is an urgent problem which must be addressed, and the sooner the better.

Is it a simple case of brands vying for market domination or does water, like food, depend on many factors to achieve true quality?

The Truth About Tap Water


In the western world, we’re fortunate to be able to turn on the tap and access unlimited water. However, many would question whether tap water is ultimately healthy.

It may be deemed safe to drink by the World Health Organisation and other professional authorities, but ‘safe’ and ‘healthy’ are two very different things.

Given that it is treated with a large number of chemicals to kill bacteria and other pesky microorganisms, water running off the mains supply is vastly different to the sort found in nature – the kind found in springs and mountain streams which is rich in naturally-occurring minerals.

We have written before about the elements which can make their way into our water, from oestradiol, ACE inhibitors and lead traces to antibiotics, antidepressants and beta-blockers, so we’ll forego raking over old ground.

Suffice to say that with over 300 man-made chemicals having at some point been detected in British tap water, better options are available.

This is particularly the case if your tap water is fluoridated: about 10% of the UK population receive fluoridated water, including Cumbria, Cheshire, Tyneside, Northumbria, Durham, the West Midlands and most of Ireland.

Indeed, many people now use a filter to eliminate not only fluoride but hardness, chlorine and other potentially dangerous toxins.

Although we’d applaud such a move, many filters leave water deficient in beneficial trace minerals which, among other things, are vital to cellular metabolism, growth and vitality.

Clearly the question of which water is healthiest is more complex than most realise!

Healthy Water: Assessing the Options


In our view water should be clean, free of toxins and particulates, and properly structured.

We’ll get on to our recommendations shortly, but for the moment let’s look at the main alternatives to tap water.

Whether due to cost, taste, environmental considerations or some other factor, people regularly choose to shun tap water in favour of the following options.

Bottled Water


Whether it stems from concern about tap water or a fondness for its crisper, cleaner flavour, bottled water is hugely popular.

The UK bottled water market is worth £2.4 billion and has grown year-on-year since 2012. Total bottled water production stood at over 2,700 million litres last year. It’s no different in America, where consumers shell out $16 billion annually.

It’s difficult to make a sweeping judgement about bottled water, since there are many different kinds: mineral, spring, artesian, well water etc.

Well water and artesian water originate underground, spring water comes from surface water and mineral water – which accounts for the lion’s share (45%) of the UK market – comes from natural springs rich in minerals like salt and sulfur compounds.

If you’re opting for bottled water, always check the label to find the source and scrutinise the mineral content. Don’t be duped by buzzwords like ‘mountain’ and ‘glacier’, as these are often little more than marketing ploys.

Some bottled water actually derives from tap water which is treated/filtered prior to packaging.

Of course, there’s more to water than mineral content. Some studies have shown that plastic bottles leach chemicals into the water, and that the longer water sits inside a bottle, the higher the concentration of particular chemicals.

The WWF goes so far as to insist that ‘there are more standards regulating tap water than those applied to the bottled water industry.’

The environmental impact, meanwhile, is huge; as well as being resource-intensive plastic bottles take over 1,000 years to biodegrade and, if incinerated, produce toxic fumes.

We can’t, with any good faith, say that bottled water is advisable – although if you’re still bound and determined, go with glass, not plastic.

Distilled Water


So vigorous is its filtration process that distilled water is stripped not only of impurities but also any natural minerals and electrolytes it contains.

Distilled water is made from the steam of boiling water. The process of boiling and evaporation produces water which has a cleaner, though also flatter, taste – similar, really, to that which undergoes the process of reverse osmosis or deionisation.

Distillation is a somewhat outdated method of water purification, as better systems have come into being over the last 10-15 years.

Since it is devoid of minerals, distilled water cannot replace those lost through sweat. It also has a more acidic pH (around 7.0), which is definitely not optimal for the body.

In spite of this, some people still claim distilled water is ‘pure’ and has a cleansing effect. Certainly it’s one way of avoiding harmful environmental chemicals and waterborne pathogens.

Alkaline Water

The popularity of alkaline water has soared in recent years, though it’s been in vogue throughout Asia for a lot longer.

Alkaline water is engineered to have a higher pH than tap or bottled water, sitting anywhere between 7.5 and 10 (7 is neutral).

It’s also a fertile source of potassium, calcium, magnesium, silica and bicarbonate.

Drinking water with an alkaline pH has many benefits. It has been variously shown to relieve acid and pepsin-related conditions, improve mineral retention and optimise post-exercise hydration.

Most of the goodness stems from the water’s acid-buffering capacity, although it also has powerful antioxidant properties which help counteract oxidative stress.

There are a few ways of procuring alkaline water; you can buy it pre-bottled from a health store (the least environmentally-friendly option) or use a filter device such as the Biocera Alkaline Antioxidant Jug.

The jug uses combinations of natural bioceramic minerals to alkalise water added to it, elevating the pH from 7.5 to 9.5.

A measure of filtration is also achieved, as the bioceramics help to reduce chlorine and heavy metals.

Reverse Osmosis Water


Like distilled water, reverse osmosis water is usually referred to as ‘purified’: it is forced through membranes which remove particulates and pollutants. However, in our view it is little more than pure, dead water.

One problem with this type of water, aside from the fact that it’s demineralised (which leads to increased elimination of minerals from the body), is that it doesn’t hydrate as well as others.

Since we ostensibly drink water to hydrate our cells, it begs the question: why would you choose RO water over other kinds?

Another note to add to the ‘Cons’ column: the water’s usually acidic. Drinking acidic water will hamper our ability to maintain a healthy pH balance in the blood.

Lastly, RO systems can be expensive to install. Again, you can get far better water than the kind that runs through a costly reverse osmosis machine.

Hydrogen Water


We’ve saved the best till last. Hydrogen water, or hydrogen-rich water, is in our view the best drinking water in the world. But what the hell is hydrogen water, we hear you ask.

In simple terms, it is water which contains dissolved hydrogen gas (molecular hydrogen).

Hydrogen water has been subject to plenty of research in the Far East (indeed, it has been drunk in Japan since the ’60s) and the results are frankly incredible.

Not only can hydrogen-rich water increase energy and improve recovery but it can combat inflammation and neutralise oxygen free radicals.

While more human trials are needed (thus far, most studies have been on mice), the buzz around molecular hydrogen is entirely justified, with over 500 peer-reviewed studies demonstrating its therapeutic potential.

One person who’s convinced by the science is Dr. Nicholas Perricone, a world-renowned healthy aging expert, who goes as far as to say he believes “we’ll reduce health-care costs by a third when people start drinking hydrogen water.”

A bold claim, to be sure, but one which doesn’t seem quite so surprising when you start digging into the literature.

One 2010 study in particular showed that when 20 overweight subjects with signs of metabolic syndrome drank 2 litres of hydrogen water per day for a period of eight weeks they experienced a 39% increase in an enzyme that protects the body against free radicals.

They also enjoyed a 43% reduction in thiobarbituric acid (an organic compound linked to oxidative damage) and a 13% drop in total cholesterol.

fascinating 2018 study, meanwhile, showed that “Hydrogen-rich water administration for 4 weeks improved mood, anxiety and autonomic nerve function, suggesting that it may offer an effective method to reinforce Quality of Life and maintain good health.”

Who would’ve thought drinking two litres of hydrogen-rich water could do so much? You can buy this new-age wellness water ready-to-drink in cans or pouches, purchase a hydrogen water machine (warning: you’ll need deep pockets), dissolve molecular hydrogen tablets in water, or source a filter which stimulates the release of H2.

Should You Remove Fluoride from your Water Supply?

The fluoridation of our water supply is about as contentious an issue as you can conceive. Should we remove fluoride from our water or not?

Although half a century has elapsed since adding fluoride to drinking water became normal practice, the debate around whether the process is ultimately good – or terribly bad – has barely lowered in volume or intensity.

If you live in the UK, you may or may not be drinking fluoridated water on a daily basis.

In this article we explore the possible health implications, and suggest a means of removing fluoride from your tap water if you so desire.

Why is Fluoride Added to Water in the First Place?

Fluoride is a mineral naturally present in soil, water, plants – even animals in trace amounts. The long-raging debate, however, is not about this fluoride but the artificial kind added to water (and, in Europe, to salt). The difference is significant: the lethal dose of artificial fluoride is 50 times smaller than natural fluoride.

In the 1930s, scientists discovered that small quantities of fluoride naturally present in water could offer teeth a measure of protection by strengthening enamel against decay, and thus the idea of adding fluoride to the public water supply was born.

Although a series of studies were conducted to assess whether fluoridating water could cause harm, research appeared to indicate that the dangers were small. Naturally enough, medical and dental health bodies – having been impressed by fluoride’s ability to combat tooth decay – championed the compound, and in time the process was normalised, spreading outward from the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan, where it was first instituted.

In addition to preventing tooth decay and cavities, proponents of water fluoridation claim that it saves money, citing the cost of water fluoridation vs the cost of dental fillings. Moreover, they state their belief that it is a safe and effective practice, endorsed by countless health organisations for the best part of 70 years. Of course, this tells only half the story.

Water Fluoridation: A Divisive Subject

It is generally accepted that ingesting large amounts of fluoride long-term can lead to severe skeletal fluorosis. Susceptibility to this debilitating bone disease varies from population to population, although it is a major problem in India, where water has an unusually high naturally-occurring fluoride content.

Fluoride in the UK water supply is capped at one part per million (1ppm) parts of water, whereas in India the concentration has been shown in certain areas to reach 38.5ppm.

Critics of water fluoridation have pointed out that although the artificial fluoride content of tap water is low, there is no way to determine how much water a person will drink on any given day.

What’s more, studies in India and China have documented skeletal fluorosis at comparatively low levels – between 0.7 and 1.5ppm.

As well as fluorosis, fluoride could be linked to increased risks of kidney problems, cognitive impairment, depression, osteoporosis, hyperthyroidism and even cancer; some go as far as to claim it’s a form of under-the-radar mass medication, hence why many councils in Britain steadfastly refuse to introduce fluoride to their local water supply, flying in the face of vested interests and government backing.

At present, there is a sense of gridlock: no new fluoridation schemes have been passed in Britain for two decades. That seems unlikely to change in the short-term.

Which UK Cities Have Fluoridated Water?

Around 11% of the UK population, comprising six million people, are given artificially fluoridated water through the mains supply. Areas include Birmingham, Yorkshire and the Humber, and Tyneside, with Hartlepool and Essex receiving naturally-fluoridated water.

Your local water supplier will be able to tell you how much fluoride is in your supply, and whether any is added artificially. Interestingly, the average number of decayed, extracted or filled teeth in Birmingham – a city of one million people – is higher than the national average, despite the water being fluoridated.

The anti-fluoridation brigade is not confined to Britain. In recent times, countries such as Germany, Sweden and Switzerland have been phasing out the policy of fluoridating water. In fact, less than 2% of Europe’s population is served fluoridated water through the tap.  

Dosage levels in the US, where 150 million people are exposed to fluoride, have been reduced to 0.7ppm, and the same is true for Canada and the Republic of Ireland

As people become more informed, many are unwilling to take risks with their health by drinking – or being forced to drink – water they consider harmful to their long-term health. 

According to a 2019 study published in JAMA Pediatrics, high fluoride exposure during pregnancy correlates with lower IQ scores among young children, particularly boys. The study results compelled co-author Christine Till, an associate professor of psychology at York University in Toronto, to state that women should reduce their fluoride intake during pregnancy, calling it a "no-brainer" and "a low-hanging-fruit recommendation to [protect] the safety of the fetus."

Strathspey Water Dispute: Residents Demand Clean Water

The Strathspey water dispute looks set to rumble on, after hundreds of residents called for a full-scale review into the safety of water chloramination. The quality of tap water in both Strathspey and Badenoch has come into question ever since Scottish Water opened a £24 million treatment works at Aviemore in 2012 and began taking supplies from a subterranean aquifer. Previously, the source had been Loch Einich in the Cairngorms.

Residents Petition Parliament on Water Quality

Access to clean drinking water is about as enshrined a right as we have in the United Kingdom. However, the mains supply in the Cairngorms National Park is now steadfastly avoided by many. This was after Scottish Water admitted that a small number of customers had found chlorine levels ‘not to their taste.’ The taste and smell of the water, specifically, have been criticised.

Last Thursday, May 25, Caroline Hayes and Kincraig community councillor Lesley Dudgeon presented a petition signed by hundreds of disgruntled residents to the Scottish Parliament’s public petitions committee, calling for a review. The committee has now agreed to liaise with both the Scottish Government and Scottish Water, scrutinise water quality regulation and green-light independent research into the chloramination of drinking water not just in Strathspey, but throughout the country.

Alarmingly, residents in Strathspey and Badenoch have alleged that water from the mains supply is causing an outbreak of skin complaints – and many have resorted to drinking only bottled water. The NHS Highland health board have recently agreed to review additional health data in an effort to clarify the matter.

What is Chloramination?

Chloramination is a means of water treatment that has gained popularity in recent years. Chloramines are combinations of chlorine and ammonia (in small quantities) which are added to the water to kill potentially harmful bacteria. The chloramination process was completed at Aviemore at the start of April.

According to a 2016 Water Quality Report by the Schererville Water Department in Indiana: ‘Although chloramination is a very effective means of water treatment, it can be toxic when introduced directly into the bloodstream.’ Of course, there is no suggestion that chloramines have entered the bloodstream of residents in the Cairngorms.

One vocal critic of chloramination is well-known environmental campaigner Erin Brocovich, who called Scottish Water’s new process a dirty trick. ‘Adding ammonia to drinking water does not improve it,’ she said. ‘It masks the underlying problems and contaminants. It adds additional chemicals and creates more reactions that are in fact more toxic.’

Djanette Khiari, Research Manager at the Water Research Foundation, echoes those concerns: ‘Chloramination can be a complex process and improper management can lead to unintended consequences including nitrification, formation of non-regulated DBPs and deleterious effects on some elastomeric materials used in the distribution system… Water professionals need to understand the various aspects of chloramination with the goal to better manage and operate their systems and minimise unintended consequences.’

The Link Between Chloramines and N-nitrosamines

In a forthcoming peer-reviewed paper to be published in the June edition of the American Water Works Association (AWWA) journal, Kathryn Linge – a senior research fellow at the Curtin Water Quality Research Centre, part of Western Australia’s Curtin University – assesses the effects of chloramination and chlorination.

Linge and her fellow researchers have specifically investigated the effects of both water treatment methods on the formation of N-nitrosamines – chemical compounds which have been reported to be carcinogenic, mutagenic and/or teratogenic.

The team found that all measured N-nitrosamines, excluding N-nitrosodipropylamine, were detected at least once, and total N-nitrosamine formation ‘was higher after chloramination than after chlorination.’ The authors found that NDMA formation was always higher in chloramination experiments.

NDMA – N-nitrosodimethylamine – is a probable human carcinogen according to the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Integrated Risk Information System. NDMA is the most common N-nitrosamine detected in drinking water. In the past, rubber materials used in water pipelines have been cited as being responsible for the formation of NDMA in chloraminated drinking water distribution systems. NDMA and other N-nitrosamines have also been found to leach from latex gloves.

In a recent review of NDMA concentration in 38 Australian drinking water systems, the formation of NDMA was shown to be limited to a few specific treatment plants: the primary factors leading to NDMA detection were the chloramination process and the use of poly-DADMAC as a coagulant aid.

What Next for Strathspey Water?

Evidently the concerns of residents must be assuaged, and the public petitions committee is now in the process of contacting various organisations in an attempt to do just that.

Scottish Water, meanwhile, has assured residents that Strathspey water is fully compliant with required standards; it has also defended the process of chloramination.

In the meantime, many people in the local area are continuing to hydrate by drinking bottled water. Nethy Bridge farmer John Kirk even claims his cattle turn their noses up at the local tap water, so it’s not hard to see why people are resorting to this.

Instead of buying bottled water by the caseload, denizens of the areas affected might consider investing in a good quality point-of-sale water filter which removes chloramines and other potentially dangerous chemical contaminants from the mains supply.

One hopes the Badenoch and Strathspey water dispute can be resolved in the near future. It will be interesting to see whether the Scottish Parliament committee can satisfy Caroline Hayes, Lesley Dudgeon and the other angry residents, who are learning that satisfactory tap water should never be taken for granted.

The University of Edinburgh Tested Our Energy Plus Water Filter: The Incredible Results

The University of Edinburgh has tested the system and verified that both steps work as intended.

The university's Department of Engineering tested the Energy Plus filter for its recommended lifespan of one year. They found that it delivered high levels of contaminant removal, testing for pollutants such as fluoride, heavy metals and organic contaminants like estradiol, bisphenol-A or BPA and chlorophenol. In fact, they found that all organic contaminants were reduced to below the level at which they could be detected. Let's consider these in turn.

Fluoride

Fluoride is a chemical compound that consists primarily of fluorine and either salt or calcium. In its pure form, fluorine is a poisonous pale yellow gas of the halogen series that is the most reactive of all the elements, causing very severe burns on contact with skin. The vast majority of European countries – including Scotland, Ireland, Germany, France and Italy – have ruled out artificial fluoridation of tap water. Artificial fluoridation is legal in Britain and practiced by some of the country's water suppliers, especially around Birmingham and in eastern England. Those who do not live in these areas should not feel too comfortable, however, since fluoride is found in most water from natural sources.

The long-term intake of fluoride at the legally permitted levels has been linked with many adverse health effects. Those with consume fluoride are more likely than non-consumers to suffer from osteoarthritis, weaker bones, lower intelligence and brain development, and fatigue, obesity and depression due to under-active thyroid disorder. If it is consumed at levels above the British legal limits, which may be naturally present in some water, there is a consensus in the medical community that it will cause severe dental and skeletal fluorosis, the latter of which is completely crippling.

Heavy Metals

Our underground soil and rock formations contain arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead and selenium. Our water pipes may leak lead and copper. All of these metals can thus be found in pretty much all our water. They are probably not harmful at extremely low levels; heavy metals occur naturally in the environment after all, and human beings have encountered them daily for thousands of years. The levels in our water may not be especially low, however, since factories, mines, fuel, sludge from farms, inappropriate rubbish disposal and many other 21st-century habits contribute to and dump metals into our water.

One study that surveyed the health effects of heavy metals found that chronic cadmium intake caused kidney damage, bone brittleness and bone fractures, and led to stifled neurological development – associated with lower intelligence, dementia and a variety of disorders of the nervous system. It also found that arsenic resulted in various types of cancer and skin lesions. Meanwhile, other studies have linked arsenic to neurological effects, hypertension, peripheral vascular disease, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease and diabetes mellitus. Many recent studies suggest that chronic low levels of cadmium may cause cancer and harm reproductive health. Heavy metals, therefore, should be filtered out of our water.

Organic Contaminants

Oestradiol is a hormone, the strongest naturally produced form of oestrogen. It is found in both men and women, but men and postmenopausal women produce a lot less of it. Oestradiol supports bone density, improves arterial blood flow, helps to develop necessary proteins and works as an antioxidant. So why complain when the oestradiol excreted by humans and farm animals ends up in our water? The type found in tap water is usually synthetic, not natural. The synthetic oestradiol used in the contraceptive pill, for example, is up to 100 times stronger than the naturally occurring one. Through the recycling of sewage water, the oestradiol from millions of contraceptive pills end up in our tap water.

Our bodies carefully regulate the amount of oestradiol in our bloodstream. An excessive amount of chronically consumed oestradiol can interfere with male fertility and may cause them to develop more fat and breast tissue.
