The Difference Between Common Water Jug Filters and Alkaline Jug Filters

The Difference Between Common Water Jug Filters and Alkaline Jug Filters

The importance of a healthy diet is well known to us all, and water particularly is an essential element of this. Even if we fastidiously drink 2 litres per day, heeding commonly touted advice, can we be sure we are doing the best thing for our health?

Unfortunately tap water is not as pure as we would hope. Bacteria, pesticides, microplastics and detergents, amongst other things, are regularly found present in the water that we use to drink. Clearly are many valid reasons to filter our tap water.

Bottled Water vs Tap Water

It is strange to think that the very chemicals used to clean the bacteria in our water supply could also be doing harm to our bodies.

Chlorine in particular has been linked to various diseases and birth defects. Aluminium and fluoride are amongst the other main concerns, as confirmed by multiple scientific studies.

There have been equally valid concerns raised about bottled water. It is often no better in quality than the water that comes from our tap, but with the added problem of being contained in plastic bottles that leach estrogenic chemicals into the mix.

What’s more, research suggests that bottled water is subject to far less stringent safety tests than tap water.

Differences in Water Filtration

With concern mounting, the availability of water filtration systems has increased. Many manufacturers of water filters claim to remove chlorine, lead and other contaminants from tap water with their purification processes.

As expected, these systems vary in cost and effectiveness.

Some water filtration processes (notably reverse osmosis) claim to provide completely pure water, which means that which contains zero Total Dissolved Solids (TDS).

Standard tap water generally contains 300 to 500 mgs per litre. Some argue that a zero rating means that the natural minerals in the water, which are beneficial to health, are also removed but you can remedy this simply by adding a special mineral attachment to some systems.

Dr Martin Fox, author of ‘Healthy Water for a Longer Life’ is quoted as saying:

“It would be a mistake to believe that water with a very low or even zero TDS rating is an indication that the water is better.”

Comparing water filters is difficult, as most do not clearly display their filtration figures on their websites. The NSF is a non-profit organisation that independently tests water filters and certifies exactly which contaminants are removed by each filter.

It is important to note, however, that many water filtration companies are not certified by NSF, and this means that the claims they make are not independently verified.

What About Common Jug Filters?

There are affordable jug filters widely available in supermarkets, and these have grown in popularity.

Consumers often tend to pick one off the shelf and assume that this is enough to cleanse their drinking water and guarantee a safe supply with no contaminants.

However, most typical filter jugs mainly reduce chlorine, heavy metals and limited amounts of dissolved organic containments.

This kind of filter is suitable to reduce the visible build up of limescale which causes damage to kettles, but unfortunately leaves water acidic.

The filters soften hard tap water, which generally means that less natural minerals will remain. There are also claims that these filters improve the taste of water.

One jug filter option which may be more effective in producing healthy drinking water is the Biocera Alkaline Jug. Not only is it just as affordable as jug filters commonly found in supermarkets, but it allows everyone to enjoy alkaline ionised water and the benefits this affords our bodies.

This is achieved without expensive electrical or plumbing connections, and is more environmentally-friendly than bottled water. What’s more, Biocera are independently certified by the NSF.

The Biocera Alkaline Water Filter Jug

The filter cartridge in the Biocera Alkaline Jug is very different to the traditional jug filter. It is composed of activated carbon and three separate bioceramic filters.

The filters are made up of bioceramic balls of naturally-occurring minerals, chosen for their specific beneficial properties.

Biocera filter cartridges remove chlorine and dissolved solid contaminants from tap water as well as increasing the alkalinity of the water.

The cartridge further oxidises the water to load molecules with a negative charge. The antibacterial effect of the cartridges mean they can last for longer than conventional filters too, another cost-effective element.

The jugs provide water with a pH level higher than 7, making it alkalised. There has been lots of misinformation circulated about alkaline water, so we’d like to clear a few things up.

Alkaline water helps to neutralise excess acidity in the body caused by poor diet, stress and environmental pollutants. It also helps the body to absorb nutrients and detoxify cells. Reduced acidity can lower inflammation linked to chronic disease.

According to a 2017 study, following a plant-based Mediterranean-style diet and drinking alkaline water may be as effective at controlling reflux symptoms as conventional medication.

Other studies show that drinking alkaline water can lower cholesterol, blood glucose and blood pressure,  improve acid-base balance and hydration status, and help reduce the buildup of lactic acid and cardiorespiratory stress

You can read more about the benefits of alkaline water here.

The alkaline water produced by the Biocera Alkaline Jug is broken down into smaller clusters of molecules that pass more easily through cell walls, hydrating the body more efficiently and aiding the detoxification process.

Drinking pure alkalised, ionised water could provide optimum hydration for our bodies. The benefits are far-reaching and point towards improved health and disease prevention thanks to the antioxidants present in the water.

All of this can be achieved simply and affordably with our best-selling Biocera Alkaline Jug, which has garnered well over 100 positive reviews since we integrated Feefo Customer Reviews on to our website.

In truth, thousands of people have benefitted from using the Jug since we introduced it to the UK market in 2009.

Water for Health Ltd began trading in 2007 with the goal of positively affecting the lives of many. We still retain that mission because we believe that proper hydration and nutrition can make a massive difference to people’s health and quality of life. Click here to find out more.
