While many might turn their noses up at another health trend.
Alkaline water makes a difference in many areas of health.
Pure water, in and of itself, is required for every cell of your body to work.
When I say “pure” water, I’m referring to water that hasn’t been contaminated by man.
Naturally, drinking water should be alkaline.
Take spring water as an example…
When it flows over rocks it picks up natural minerals that make the water more alkaline.
Meaning, drinking alkaline water is a more natural way to stay hydrated.
Water can help brighten your skin, enhance brainpower and regulate your blood pressure.
This is all very impressive
But what about weight loss?
How can water aid the removal of fat?
The science is in, and water can indeed help you lose weight.
But, only as part of a lifestyle change.
Water alone can’t do it all.
Exercise, dietary changes and a more holistic approach are required to lose weight.
Most importantly, to keep it off in the long run.
Water helps in two key ways - decreased appetite, and increased fat burning.
Let’s explore 5 important ways that water can help you lose weight.
1. Water Can Help You Burn Fat
The scientific name for burning fat is “lipolysis.” Some studies have been carried out in animal models, to find out if drinking more water increased lipolysis (or fat burning). The results were published in 2016 , in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition highlighting the fact that increasing water intake in rodents resulted in additional fat burning. The underlying mechanisms at play are poorly understood. Perhaps it’s that extra water helps metabolise fat, or the additional fat loss could be due to hormonal changes.

2. Drinking Alkaline Water May Boost Your Metabolism
Drinking chilled water, in particular, ensures that your body has to expend energy to heat the water. In turn, boosting your metabolism. A study published in 2013 outlined a trial where 50 overweight females were instructed to drink two cups of water before each meal.
Even without exercising, the ladies lost weight. The reasons could be two-fold - they lost weight because the water crowded out the food. Ie. they were more full and therefore ate less. Or it could be that their bodies had to warm up the cool water, which boosted their metabolism and helped them lose weight .

3. Enhanced Workouts For The Hydrated
Drinking water before, during and after workouts is important to mitigate fatigue, dehydration or muscle cramps. Alkaline water contains more electrolytes like hydrogen, which ensure that the water is properly utilised in the body. Tight, sore joints and even inflammation can hinder your workout routine.
Ensuring that your body is properly hydrated is like making sure you have enough water or oil in your car. One thing to consider is that tightness can be due to avoiding warmups, so make sure you warm up properly, especially on cold days. During humid or warmer weather the need for proper hydration increases dramatically, so always keep a bottle of water by your side when you exercise.
PRO TIP: Alkaline water has been proven to improve performance and more rapidly rehydrate when compared to tap water.
4. Cravings, Cravings, Cravings
We’ve all had them. An insatiable thirst or hunger for something, normally not particularly healthy. Our guts alter according to our environment and what we eat. In essence to support us. But when we’ve trained our gut to digest fatty foods, it can be hard to resist the temptation.
If you reach for a glass of alkaline water every time you feel a pang of cravings coming on, this can dissolve your cravings. The more you reach for alkaline water, the more your body will adjust and no longer crave junk food. Often our bodies find it hard to distinguish between thirst and hunger . Being properly hydrated will crush your cravings and avoid that last-minute dash to the fridge or local bakery.

5. Helps Your Body Flush Out Toxins & Waste
Because a lot of convenience foods are toxic to our bodies, especially over time. It then becomes apparent that drinking water can help us wash out this debris. If you combine drinking adequate amounts of alkaline water with a plant-based diet, then you’ll be helping your body out. Your digestive system requires a lot of water to produce bile and all of the other components to flush out waste products.
Additionally, your digestive system needs water to carry nutrients throughout your body. As well as the creation of new blood cells. To ensure that you’re body can cleanse out the fat and toxins it has accumulated, you’ll need to drink enough alkaline water. What’s more, junk food is normally acidic, so drinking alkaline water will help your body get back into balance and boost energy levels.
In Conclusion
Water is the most abundant liquid on earth, covering more than 70% of the earth’s surface. We need adequate amounts of water to thrive on earth. Natural water and healthy foods are alkaline-forming and have a natural healing effect on the body. Making sure that you drink enough water while exercising or before meals can have a beneficial effect on your weight loss journey. By both flushing out toxins, and helping burn fat.
